Starting this summer, riders of e-bikes in Jersey will need to adhere to a new set of rules in order to avoid penalties. Electric scooters and low-speed electric bicycles are exempt from the new regulations, which will take effect on July 19. A low-speed e-bike is defined by New Jersey law as a "two-wheeled bicycle with pedals where the engine assists exclusively while pedaling."" Low-speed electric motorcycles are not subject to any regulations.Motorized bicycles capable of reaching an assisted speed of up to 28 mph must be registered and insured. Those driving a moped must be at least 15 years old and possess either a driver's license or an e-bike license for those younger than 17.
